How To Immediately Put World Class Training Techniques Into Your Training

In preparation for my seminar on the 2nd of December, I wanted to share with you all some of the tools that use in my dojo that you may utilize as well.

Look, if you want to have a world class facility, it does not require for you to have a world class facility, but it does require for you to have world class faculties. And the faculties that I’m speaking of are your abilities to think, reason, synthesize and implement quality information… QUICKLY!

In order to add world class training techniques to your training, what you have to do is, use the strategies and technologies of the pros.

It’s that easy.

The most difficult part is getting out of your own way.

=============
Just A Quick Story
=============

I had a coaching call with my technical mentor and coach, 3-Time Olympian in Judo, Angelo Ruiz.  And during our call he asked me if I was doing video analysis. To which I replied, “Of course.”

But then he asked, “How long does it take you to do the feedback?”  I replied and then he said, “No! You need to have video delay in your dojo so that the feedback is immediate. You are actually hurting your students progress because you are not getting the information to them quicker?

He then said, “We are coaches. We know what they are doing wrong, but they need to know what they are doing wrong and the sooner that they can know in the process, the better chance that they have of self correcting or not making the errors at all.”

Needless to say… I had the conversation with Angelo in the morning and by that same evening I was setup with the video delay system and utilizing it.  (RAPID IMPLEMENTATIONAs soon as I got off the phone, I started putting the pieces in place. I did not have this transmission with the list of stuff like I’m giving you. I figured out what you have at your fingertips, right now.)

And the rapid rate of improvement of my students has been noticeable.

THANKS COACH Angelo! You’ve been there every step of the way!

And just so that you know…..

EVERYONE NEEDS A DAMN COACH!!!
I DON’T CARE HOW GOOD YOU ARE!!!

I was on the phone with Angelo for 90 minutes and he asked me questions that were hard to answer. Questions like:

  • Do you know the biomechanics of the seionage?
  • Which version of seionage are you using? Why? Why not the other one?
  • At what point do you see the breakdown in the total system?
  • Do you have a system in place for that?
  • If so, what is it?
  • Explain it. In detail.
  • Have you done the biomechanical analysis on that or do you know it?
  • Di me el sistema de su programa en newaza.  Porque? Que es la problema con su sistema? (and yes, Angelo will sometimes just switch to spanish on you and you need to follow and keep it moving LOL)
  • Who told you that?
  • Where did you get that sh*t from?
  • That’s great, but how do you know?

And let me tell you something….. YOU CAN’T ALWAYS ANSWER the questions. AND IT IS IRRITATING AS HELL!!!

And you know what?

YOU NEED SOMEONE WHO GETS IN YOUR SH*T and asks you questions that most people will not ask you because of your position and status.

You need people to keep you sharp.

You need to know that you are full of sh*t if you are spouting off things with no data, no background, and no research.  Professionals aren’t concerned with how you feel as much as they are concerned with the data points and experiences of how you got to the point of feeling like that. Coach Angelo has transitioned from Judo to archery and is a top coach in that sport but since everything in warfare basically is an extension of the sword, we can talk the same language across sports.  As a matter of fact, the last time that we met, we were in Tampa both working with a boxer.

Okay, let’s get
back on track
============

For those of you all who are not aware, one of the major tools in deliberate practice is feedback.  Now this feedback can come from many sources but one of the main sources is the coach.

To enhance the feedback system and to push it toward its optimal level of functioning, what many in the sport industry use is video feedback.

Now in sports we are all familiar with film study.  I don’t think that anybody does film study and film analysis better than the National Football League. In college football we studied film ad nauseum. To the point where I could line up in a game on a Saturday and I could basically tell you the names of every player on defense, where they were from, if they were left handed or right handed and what they were going to do per the formation they lined up in.  That is just how much we studied and analyzed film. I took that skill set to judo and that is how I was able to return to judo in 1997 and make the Olympic Team by 2004.

For the purpose of performance, not scouting, you have to analyze yourself.  (You must analyze yourself when scouting too but that’s another discussion). And if you are a coach, you have to create a way for the player to analyze themselves so that they know what to look for during training.

One of the best ways to do this is to implement a video delay feedback system inside of your dojo.  This will allow your students to perform techniques and then get immediate feedback from you, verbally, and from the video, visually.

As coaches, sometimes we know exactly what we want our students to do and we know what we are asking for but sometimes the student needs to see themselves doing the technique and you pointing out exactly what you want them to do. As instructors we must understand that there are different types of learners on the tatami and that the quicker we can provide feedback, the better we can reduce some of the major bottlenecks to the acquisition of expertise. Like, 1.) providing quality feedback and 2.) the reduction of the time that quality feedback is provided.

Here’s what I use and what you can use to reduce these bottlenecks and implement a video delay system in your dojo today:

  1. iPhone (smartphone)
  2. Video Delay App
  3. A television
  4. HDMI cord
  5. HDMI adtapter for your phone
  6. tripod

The total set up time takes about 7 to 10 minutes. After that, it’s just a matter of plugging everything in and having your student get into a position where they can perform and then watch.

I’ve even used this for technical newaza sessions where I’ve set the lag to 3 minutes and have the student watch the whole newaza randori round after they finish for….. IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK.

Mastermind Event

If you are a parent, athlete or a coach that is looking
for some answers.
If you are trying to solve for “X”…..
If you know that there are some things that you cannot
figure out and that you need some help, then here I am
offering this to you:

“Announcing A Special Fall Two Day Mastermind
Event
With Dr. Rhadi Ferguson In Tampa Florida”

In every profession there are a select few who are designed, called and destined to reach the top faster than anyone else. These are people who have a dream, desire and a burning passion for success.

They believe in being persistently persistent and consistently consistent.Their time on the mat is an investment, not a hobby….. rather, something that propels them forward in life.

They have realized with their “real eyes” that they have a purpose on the earth and failing is not an option. For some it is to win. For others it is to teach.
And for others it is to support the dreams of others, which IS, their dream.

See, it is my DREAM to support your dream.
It is actually what provides me joy in life.

I love seeing other people become successful. There’s nothing like watching and aiding a person to chase after a worthy goal through a worthy cause.I never tire of seeing it and facilitating it. It’s akin to watching a baby take their first steps for the first time. You know there will be much falling, bruising, scrapes and cuts but that’s all part of the process.

And just as parents child proof a home to minimize severe injuries but not to prevent quality lessons, that is what a good coach does as well.  And in is
in these special and intense coaching groups and sessions where you can learn how to walk clearly toward your goal while minimizing the amount of times you “bump your head” along the way.

So, in this 2 Day Mastermind, that is what I am going to do. I’m going to take you by the hand and help guide your steps for a bit.  I’m going to help
you find the secrets for your success on and off the mat. I’m going to allow you to access areas that were not available  for you before.

And we will do it…. TOGETHER.

Now, I would love to have everybody BUT….. THIS is for that group of special people who are passion-filled, goal driven and hungry to fulfill their purpose.

This is for those who are committed to being persistently persistent and consistently consistent.

It’s also for only 5 people

Just 5.

That’s it.
