Side note: I started this gratitude exercise and I was just going to do 7 days, but then some remarkable things have been happening in my life and I’ve gotten so much feedback from all of you all that I think I’m just going to keep going until I get to day 21.

Introduction

==========

I’ve been able to accomplish something that not many people on the planet have been able to do. And quite honestly, some of it had to do with me and much of it was luck, chance, happenstance and favor from God.

Being an Olympian is a wonderful experience. It allows you to look back on your life with a level of satisfaction that most don’t get experience. It also can be a very damning achievement, as it takes times to look back at your career and be satisfied with what you have accomplished because you have to face the facts that you cannot go back and do any of those things again.

Many people who are Olympians don’t realize that socioeconomic status, parental sacrifices, exposure, health, birth date, location, sport access and many other variables OTHER THAN hard work come into play.

Case in point, you can life in the Bahamas, and you can work hard and I don’t care how hard you work, the likelihood of you being a short track speed skater at the Winter Olympics is HIGHLY unlikely if not damn near impossible.

Just like it is very unlikely for a person from Iceland to make the Olympic team in the 100 meter dash with today’s qualification standards. It’s possible, just highly unlikely.

That being said, there’s a level of divine providence in play that, when coupled with hard work, self-determination, and a host of sacrifices, enables and individual to achieve the status of Olympian.

So, with that being said and UNDERSTOOD. I am very grateful to be able call myself a 2004 Olympian in the sport of Judo. And I am thankful to all those who taught me, coached me, helped me, trained me, and loved me to be able to walk around that track at the Olympic stadium and compete for my country.

Thank you. I am grateful.
